Cover Saw
This machine cuts aluminum extrusions for covering the edges of storm doors. A rack can be seen in the background that is full of the extrusions. The operator places one of the sticks onto the infeed. The machine then feeds the stick into the punch die that punches holes for hinges and such to be bolted onto the door at a later time. The machine then proceedes to cut the four pieces that cover the edges of the door. The most common lengths are preprogrammed into the machine, but the operator may enter any custom length. Servo motors and ball screws were used to move the cutting stations, that way all that is needed to change lengths is the push of a button. A vacuum system was installed to keep the chips under controll. As you can see, the whole machine was covered. This was to help keep noise down and also to keep the chips from flying all over the plant.
