Baffle Plate Tapper
Baffle plates for oil filters are feed into this machine four at a time. The parts are transferred to the tap station at a rate of 24 inches per second. After the parts have been tapped, they are transferred to a brush station using the same transfer system. The brush station cleans the metal strings that are left in the parts from tapping them. A total of five sevro motors are used, two for part clamping, one to transfer, one for turning the four spindle tap head, and one for feeding the tap head into the parts. Since we are using servo motors to tap the parts, tap life is greatly increased. The machine was designed to run baffles ranging from 3" diameter to 5 1/4" diameter.
Here is where the baffles are loaded into the machine. The baffle plates on the conveyor stop at a gate until the machine is ready to load them. Also the machine will not open the gate unless there are four baffles waiting. Baffles are loaded into the machine four at a time. If the end of the run is reached with fewer than four parts the operator does a machine clean out. The machine will then accept fewer than four parts. After all the baffles are through, the machine stops and awaits changeover. The various standard baffles are programmed into the machine. The machine automatically changes the tap speed and feed and also the transfer clamps when a part number is selected.
The tap station is the main part of the machine. Here four baffles at a time are tapped using roll form taps. The taps are flooded with coolant and held in floating tap holders. This combined with controlling tap surface speed and linear feed with servo motors allows the customer to get the longest life from each tap.
